Ravi Shankar Dead at 92
Legendary Indian sitar virtuoso, Ravi Shankar died today at the age of 92. He is celebrated for being a hippee musical icon, most noted for his association with and musical influence on George Harrison and the Beatles. The obituary I read this morning detailed all of this and more, but what was surprisingly missing was any mention of a personal life. Had there been a reference to who he was survived by many would be surprised to know that he was the father of the equally famous Jazz singer and pianist, Nora Jones.
Because he was a deadbeat dad.
I learned this when I read an interview of Ms. Jones around the time of the release of her record selling first album, Come Away With Me, and she revealed that she lost all contact with her father after the age of 2. She barely knew him. It was something she did not want to talk about.
I don’t mean to diminish the talent and impact of Mr. Shankar’s music on the world, but I can’t help recall a statement once made by Jackie Kennedy, and I’m paraphrasing here: “The most important job in life is being a parent. If you screw that up, nothing else you do in life matters.”
RIP Ravi Shankar and may your daughter, and other children like her, come to terms with the fact that she never got to know you.
